AndroidPay vs ApplePay

AndroidPay launched in the UK yesterday - I tried it.

I have been using ApplePay for a few months now and it works like a dream. So much so I find it annoying when I cannot use it everywhere.

Google launched AndroidPay in the UK today. I decided to try it out - the experience was nothing like the simplicity of ApplePay.

AndroidPay

  1. Hold locked phone to terminal
  2. Wave phone at terminal
  3. Rotate the phone to get closer to the terminal
  4. Manually unlock the device
  5. Hold phone to terminal
  6. Wave phone at terminal
  7. Rotate the phone to get closer to the terminal
  8. Manually launch already running AndroidPay
  9. Payment made

This is a marked difference between how it works in the other camp.

ApplePay

  1. Hold locked phone to terminal
  2. Payment made

Why is there such a big difference?

Not sure.

My Android device doesn't have a fingerprint scanner - that might be a reason for the difficulty. However, that does not explain why the AndroidPay app failed to launch when near the device.

Final thoughts

I will try again at a different store and see if it that improves things. I am not hoping it will fail - but the Android platform has not done well in this arena.
