Apple iPhone 7 Announcement

Better audio, cameras, more power and better storage.

4.7" & 5.5" Displays

Apple has chosen to keep the same screen sizes as before, first introduced with the iPhone 6 family and then again with last year's 6s family update.

12mp Back & 7mp Front Cameras

The introduction of dual cameras on the rear of 7 Plus version means better quality pictures at different distances, optical zoom will be a real benefit.

The rear camera retains the same capabilities as last year's models with 30fps at 4K, 30/60 fps at 1080p & 30fps at 720p.

The increase to a 7mp camera for FaceTime (front) is a huge leap over the previous 1.2mp version. Being able to take 8mp pictures whilst recording 4k is also rather cool.

Storage

Biggest surprise of them all was the doubling of all storage size, not just the entry level 16GB that was clearly showing its age for a premium phone.

So now you may choose from 32GB, 128GB & 256GB. The only phone to keep the 16GB entry point is the iPhone SE, even the iPhone 6s/6s plus have had their storage increased.

Sound

Audio has been greatly improved with the new speakers, one placed at the top, the other at the bottom. A high-end phone deserves good quality audio and this has always been a problem with the iPhone devices. A nice touch is how that placement benefits video the most as that will be the most common use of the speakers.

Headphone Jack (Dead)

One of the most spoken about changes prior to the announcement is if the traditional 3.5mm headphone jack would be retired. Turns out the guesses were true as the headphones are now connected via the lightning port.

This is a big change, an unwelcome one to some, certainly an expensive decision as you will now need to buy replacement headphones or convertors if the provided set is insufficient for your needs.

With a push towards wireless headphones with AirBuds and products from other companies - you will need to spend a lot of money.

Colours

They increased the colour choices; Rose Gold, Gold, Silver, Black, Jet Black. It is worth noting that the Jet Black option does not allow you to choose the new entry level storage option of 32GB.

It is a phone, get it in black, who needs any other colour?.

Waterproof

As it sounds, so feel free to drop down the toilet or into a boating lake - you should be safe for a short while (I take no responsibility for your actions).
